4:00am
welcome back. three minutes before the hour now. in iowa a fallen soldier was honored with more than 2200 flags. >> he was killed in afghanistan in a helicopter crash that killed four others. >> those flags you see were provided by a gentleman known as the flagman. he travels around the country bringing the selection of american flags to military funerals. >> he has been doing this for five years and provided flags for more than 100 services. >> the powerball jackpot, the 12th largest jackpot in history. >> no hit last night's winning numbers. local stores selling tickets saying hopefuls are streaming in
4:01am
to buy tickets for the next drawing. and after once again incorrectly predicting a spring, and michael moser indicted the guy for deception. >> he wants somebody to pay all of the cold weather they are seeing, and phil's handlers are playing along saying he has been making predictions since 1887, and he will continue, and maybe it's time to diversify a little bill in t bill. seeing eye dogs, many people use them, but what about a dog? >> a small terrier helps isaac out. they were found walking the streets of san bernardino, california, together. pretty cool. the animal rescue group is
4:02am
trying to find the pair a really good home. >> is that a cartoon movie if i ever heard of one. >> it is. thank you for starting your morning with us. we have more on "cnn saturday morning." i am christine romans. >> i am victor blackwell. we are so glad you are with us. and already linked to two murders in colorado and now investigators are look into whether this prison gang member is involved with a third killing in texas. he shot an officer that tried to pull him over. >> and investigators think he could have been involved in the murder of tom clemens, and the death of a pizza driver in denver as well. we will get to the third case in a moment, but first, jim, any new developments in the
4:03am
investigation of the prison official's murder? >> reporter: sure. good morning, christine and victor. authorities here in el paso county working the clemens murder, they are trying to put everything together. there was a gang in the prison, and authorities are working to seeing if there was a link to somebody inside the prison, a conspiracy or hit put out on mr. clemens here. he only got out of jail on january 28th, and not that long ago. it was barely a few weeks before he was killing this pizza man allegedly in denver and then the tom clemens murder. a very short amount of time and want to see if anything was going on behind bars that precipitated that. prisons here in colorado on
4:04am
lockdown all weekend as they investigate. >> christine mentioned the third death. and investigators now they are looking into the possibility that he had something to do with the third murder in that state, right? >> reporter: yeah, january 31st, just three days after he was released from prison in colorado an assistant district attorney was gunned down in kaufman county, texas, east of dallas. and they are investigating a possible link because they were doing some work with the aaron brotherhood, another white supremacist gang in texas, and they want to check out and see if there are similarities and whether if there was a third murder linked to evil. >> and he had connections to the governor of colorado, family connections. tell us about that. >> reporter: yeah, the morning after mr. clemens was killed,
4:05am
there was an emotional speech made about hiring mr. clemens, and talked about it without naming somebody a friend of his who had a son who was having trouble and how compassionate mr. clemens was. it turns out that man he talked about was the father of evan evil. his father, jack, is a prominent oil and gas attorney in the denver area and was friends with hickenlooper, and a very unusual twist this would come back around to be the friend of the governor of all people. very unusual. >> thank you for the great reporting. small airports across the country are taking a big hit starting next month. the faa just announced it's shutting down 149 air traffic control towers because of the forced spending cuts. the tower closings are opening up a lot of questions about whether the skies will be less safe, but is that really the case? here is cnn's tom foreman. >> all of the airplanes flying
4:06am
across the country will soon have fewer eyes watching them because of the the towers being closed. let's take a look at where they are, because it's not even although it's close to close. florida is losing 14. that's the most. texas losing 13. california, 11. the faa says it has to do it because it has a lot of people who are employed by it who are air traffic controllers. you want to cut cost and close the towers and you take them out of their jobs and you have a savings as painful as it may be. does it make things less safe? that's the big question. here is what we know. there are small traffic towers all over the country and handle thousands of flights every day that come and go, and they scan the skies around the area, and they scan the ground and keep an eye out for any kind of obstacle, whether it's flying or a vehicle or animal or anything else. if you get rid of those you are absolutely getting rid of one layer of protection for the plane flying in here, but there are other towers that overlap in
4:07am
terms of their radar signals and in terms of the radio contact, and they will then be keeping track of the plane when the plane needs communication. this does increase the burden of work on these other towers and that's one of the other fears here, so undeniably there is some reduction in safety by removing this tower but the plane is not replying blind, there is still a system of control and there are commercial airlines that land and take off every day at airstrips with no control towers. the bottom line is, this is the kind of thing that can send a mixed message to people out there who are taxpayers. look at this, a tower up in frederick, maryland opened less than a year ago with stimulus money, and now it's one of the towers that is being closed by the feds because of the sequester. >> thanks for keeping an eye on that, tom. thanks. a historic meeting in rome unfolding today. a pope is meeting another living
4:08am
pope for the first time in centuries. pope francis is meeting with his predecessor, pope benedict xvi. they were meeting together at benedict's home. he has been following francis' election as poep and in front of new crowds in rome. and president obama is wrapping up his trip to the middle east, and he also made stops in israel, the best bank during his trip. and he called on israel to start direct talks with the palestinians, and helped to broker an apology over the deadly commando raid, and pledged $200 million in aid to cope with the refugees from syria.
4:09am
the concurrent resolution is agreed to. >> move to reconsider? >> without objection. >> the senate has passed a budget. >> you heard it here, right there, the senate has passed a budget. it's the first time the senate has done that in four years. by the way, it's the job of your elected officials to have a budget every year, and anyway. it followed a marathon vote-o-rama. lawmakers burned the midnight oil and then some, and the democratic sponsored proposal has a $1 billion preduction in spending. all along the east coast, a bright streaking fireball caught peoples' attention last night. did you see it? if not, look here. it was captured by a dash cam in
4:10am
washington. it was probably a meteor. because it happened at 8:00 eastern, it lit up social media with sightings reported from florida to quebec. >> we will talk about what is the chance something like that could hit a city? what would we do? >> yeah. fascinating. here is what is coming up this hour. they are shocking. they are offensive. they are already being phras kwrer blastered on san francisco's city buses. who is behind the controversial new ads. a man pretending to be a pilot went right on the cockpit of a plane. >> that's pretty scary and i fly every week, so it's pretty concerning. >> how did this happen? we have new details this morning. limb rurush limbaugh has a

controversial ads with shocking messages are set to
4:23am
debut in san francisco like the one that says killing jews is worship that draws us close to allah. and homosexuality is ugly. the ads are being posted on buses around san francisco. ten of them have gone up. the woman behind them and her group, american freedom defense initiative. thank you for being with us here this morning. a lot of controversy about the ads. tell us why you want them up and what is the point? >> well, these ads are a response to a deceptive and fallacious ad campaign being run by the phus hrupl brotherhood group saying jihad is about getting to the gym every day, and our ads are to show the reality of jihad, and it's high profile quotes to increase
4:24am
awareness about the ideology that sanctions the violence and supremism of jihad. >> you are being accused of this being anti-muslim, though. what is your reaction to that criticism? >> well, it's deeply offensive to muslims because the implication is that all muslims support jihad and we know that's not true. but we don't have to pat on the back every muslim that doesn't want to kill us. we expect that. that's our bar. i think that's a deceptive statement. i know from my own e-mail box that many muslims stand with us because they escaped jihadi wars and the sharia, but there have been deadly attacks since 9/11, and americans need to understand the ideology that inspires the acts of war. >> i want to bring in linda.
4:25am
pam says she is quoting muslims including mahmoud ahmadinejad. what is your reaction? >> the ads are absurd and offensive. you are quoting a man who is a holocaust denier. he is not an american muslim. mrs. geller has a track record of vilifying the muslim community and her most recent homophobic ads who are not only offensive to the muslim american community. >> this is not the first time ads have gone up. you know the similar ads in new york. your organization successfully sued the agency that tried to ban the ads. san francisco's transit authority is in the same boat. listen. >> this is again what we see. ad attacks and defamation against me. you have the prime minister of turkey saying the muslims are
4:26am
our soldiers. the quotes i am using are quotes from the leader of the phmuslim brotherhood in egypt. my calling attention to this makes me homophobic. not calling attention to the polite of gays under the sharia is -- we don't hear this at all. it's interesting and it speaks volumes to the motive -- >> i will say there has been plenty of condemnation of mahmoud ahmadinejad and for statements he said about homosexuals and homosexually, and many condemnation of him and others. there has been prosecution of some of the people that you show on the times square bomber and the like, so it's not as if -- i guess i don't understand your
4:27am
point? >> my point is the american people are being disarmed by obscuring the true reality of jihad, and this is our way of sort of leapfrogging over the media who whitewashes and sanitizes it, and alerting the american people to what is the gravest national security threat our nation faces. >> do you see it's pamela's right to put up the billboards. >> i will say on the homophobic remarks, we could take these ads and it could be about any of the faiths that have similar if not identical views on homosexually, but what i am troubled by is her obsession and fascination with the islam and with american muslims. why is it that none of the remarks are by american muslims? we have plenty of national organizations and prominent muslim americans in the country who have not publicly stated any
4:28am
anti-gay -- as a matter of fact, the lbt community is one of our largest supporters. i believe we live in the united states and everybody deserves the same rights i have and i will never take away rights for somebody if i am fighting for the rights of my community, i am troubled and i want to question the -- >> christian and jews are not killing people. my obsession with is life and the repeated thwarted attacks with jihad. my obsession is with life, and that's what i am fighting for, freedom and liberty. >> thank you for spending time to explain it to us this
4:29am
morning. thanks. he faked his way into a cockpit, but it was clear to the crew that this man was no pilot. hear why coming up.
